Joining the industry in 2019 with a degree in Finance and Investment Management from Northumbria University, Joe achieved Chartered Financial Planner status in 2025.
When he isn't providing financial advice, Joe is an active member of the Business Advisory Board at Northumbria University.
My favourite thing about Financial Planning is the people. I’m fortunate to meet individuals from all walks of life and it is a privilege to have the chance to understand what motivates them, what worries them, and what makes them tick.
Many people can feel intimidated about speaking with a financial planner, so I really enjoy taking concepts that can seem complex or confusing and breaking them down in a way that makes sense. It’s not just about solving the problem; it’s about helping clients understand it along the way.
Finally, nothing beats the moment when everything clicks for a client, and they realise they can worry less about their money and focus more on getting the most out of their life.
I spend most of my time outdoors, whether it’s walking, running, cycling or swimming. I remember back in school, I made one of my friends promise to never let me get stuck in a job where I worked at a desk all day… quite evidently, they haven’t held up their end of the bargain!
I blame this obsession on my parents, with my Mum being big into marathons when I was little. Not to be outdone I’ve started to explore the world of Ultra Marathons. I love the self-competition that comes with these kinds of events, you are always able to push yourself much further than you initially thought.
As with lots of kids, I initially wanted to be a doctor. Both of my parents spent their careers in the in the NHS. You could make the argument that Financial Planners have some transferrable skills as well – people come to you come in with a pain point, you diagnose the problem and then decide the best route forwards.
Only downside is I can’t stand the sight of blood!
Matthew started his journey with Wealth of Advice as a Paraplanner, and has since worked his way up to being a Director & Chartered Financial Planner. During his time with us, he has also won the New Model Adviser Award for being one of the Top 35 Advisers under 35 twice, and is also a trustee of the Northumbria Historic Churches Trust charity.
For me, financial planning is all about problem-solving. One of the most rewarding aspects of the job is working closely with people. We often have deep conversations to uncover their retirement goals, plans, and bucket list dreams. From there, the challenge is figuring out how to use their pensions, investments, and other assets to make those dreams a reality.
Of course, the role isn’t always about the highs - we’re there during tough times too, like redundancy, bereavement, or ill health. In those moments, helping to reduce stress and provide financial security is incredibly meaningful.
On the flip side, sharing in clients’ retirement highlights is a real joy. I love it when someone sends a photo from a holiday or a key family moment, it’s proof that we’ve helped them achieve a fulfilling retirement.
Outside of work, I have to admit I sometimes overhear conversations about pensions and resist the urge to jump in and recommend the latest Retire Well episode! A perfect weekend for me includes quality time with my girlfriend and family, a parkrun, a good dog walk, and ideally a Newcastle United win.
One of my middle names is Pentti you can even spot it on the FCA register! My Dad was a huge rally fan and wanted to name me after the legendary “Flying Finn.” My mum won the naming debate, but dad got his wish as a middle name. Fun fact: shortly after I was named, Pentti repaid the faith by winning the RAC Rally that year!
